CFF Communications – Behind the Scenes #17

Dear all,

As we turn the page on 2023, we take a moment to look back at the milestones that have shaped our journey throughout the year.

For us, 2023 was characterised by public-private transactions and a growing demand from customers to receive guidance on the political uncertainty in the Netherlands. We also welcomed a wave of new communication talents to our team and celebrated our 30th anniversary milestone. For more than three decades, we’ve helped our clients to weather their various highs and lows, emerging stronger every time.

In our last update, we touched on some exciting projects, from our advisory role in the public offerings of esteemed companies like Beter Bed and Ordina to our engaging roundtable discussions on nuclear energy with Korea Hydro & Nuclear. Not to mention the exciting introduction of the Austrian brand Woom to the Netherlands – a true testament to our local experience, broad communications background and international reach.

In this update, you will read more about…

📈 More public-to-private transaction and Euronext’s new pre-IPO programme in 2024

Brill, a Dutch academic publishing house listed for 127 years, appointed CFF Communications as the communications advisor for their intended merger with German peer De Gruyter. After Ordina, Beter Bed Holding and a multinational telecommunications company, Brill is the fourth client we have supported in their public to private transaction in the course of 2023.

Brill was one of several companies that have announced their delisting from Euronext Amsterdam this year, while the IPO appetite remained low for the second year in a row. Euronext’s CEO Stéphane Boujnah attributes the delay and cancellation of IPOs to volatility and geopolitical tensions. Should market conditions change, Boujnah sees potential for IPOs as ‘there is a fairly full pipeline’, he told Het Financieele Dagblad in November.

Anticipating such changes, Euronext has launched IPOready, a comprehensive educational programme designed for companies that are ready to take the next step towards going public. We are proud to again partner with Euronext for IPOready, providing executives with the communications tools and insights they need when they consider an IPO and for the life as a listed company.

⭐ Meet the sparkling communications stars who will support you in 2024

This year, we celebrated our 30th anniversary with a lot of former CFF employees, but also with many new team members. Fleur Eymann, Eva Holtkamp and Rianne Perdon have been strengthening our team of communications advisors since October, bringing extensive communications experience to the table having worked in diverse PR roles at organisations including Lieven de Key, Henkel and Amnesty International.

🌱 Is your organisation fully prepared for the new CSRD directive?

The European Union has reached a provisional agreement on the implementation of its Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSRD). The proposal sets out obligations for companies regarding human rights and environmental adverse impacts, with respect to their own operations, operations of subsidiaries, and the value chain operations carried out by entities with which the company has a business relationship. The proposal also includes penalties and civic liability for violations of the obligations.

“This law is a historic breakthrough. Companies are now responsible for potential abuses in their value chain,” said MEP Lara Wolters. “Let this deal… [be] a starting point for shaping the economy of the future – one that puts the well-being of people and the planet before profits and short-termism.”

Over the past year, we have helped our clients share their many stories about how they innovate, invest and implement new ESG regulations, for example through blogs, press releases and ESG reporting.

👨🏻‍💻 Guiding market communications during cyber attacks

Over the past year we have guided clients that are facing cybersecurity threats, relevant for both listed and private companies. Preparation is key, and we assist in creating a controlled approach for handling leaks and breaches. Identifying when a leak is price-sensitive, we guide market communication without worsening the impact.

A solid crisis communications plan ensures a prompt response to incidents like system compromises or ransomware attacks. Tailored communication, based on severity impact assessment, safeguards reputation and financial stability.

🌊 Successful completion of test system, ready for full size ocean cleanup in 2024

In August 2023, cleanup System 002 returned to port for the last time as our long-lasting client The Ocean Cleanup moves to the larger and upgraded System 03 in 2024.

After two years of service, cleaning an area of 8,352 square kilometres and removing 282,787 kilograms of plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch over dozens of extractions, System 002 arrived at the Port of Victoria, Vancouver, Canada. CFF continues to support the organisation with worldwide strategic and tactical communications.
